The European Union's Entry/Exit System (EES), which digitizes border management, will be fully operational in all Schengen countries by April 10, 2026. ENUYGUN.com, Türkiye's leading travel platform, warns travelers that this new system, which ends the passport stamp era, may increase waiting times at border crossings.
From April 10, 2026, manual checks will be replaced by digital records for travel to the Schengen area. With the new system, all non-EU travelers, including Turkish citizens, will be required to provide fingerprints and have biometric photographs taken at border crossings.
ENUYGUN.com issues a critical warning for passengers: “Arrive at the airport at least 4 hours early.”
Making a statement on the subject ENUYGUN.com Deputy General Manager Orkun Özkan“A new era begins for European travel on April 10, 2026, with the EES (Entry/Exit System) becoming fully operational. This new system, which introduces mandatory fingerprinting and biometric photos at passport control, may increase waiting times at border crossings. While manual passport control takes an average of 30-45 seconds, it is predicted that the initial registration process with EES will add an extra 2 to 4 minutes per passenger. To ensure that passengers' travel plans are not disrupted, especially for connecting flights..." flight ticket We recommend that airports extend their connection times longer than usual and plan their departure times to the airport according to this new congestion situation,” he said.
Özkan continued: “The application is mandatory for all citizens of the Republic of Turkey, regardless of whether they hold a burgundy, green, or gray passport. Especially for connecting flights, it is critically important to extend layover times much longer than usual for the first stop where passport control will take place. Those who want to speed up the process can use the self-service kiosks at the airports. Particularly for the year 2026, when the system will first be implemented, it is essential to take precautions during busy holiday periods such as Bayram and summer vacations.”
What is the EES system?
The new system aims to reduce the margin of error in manual checks to zero. According to the new procedure, the rule of staying 90 days within a 180-day period will be automatically calculated by the system. Passengers exceeding the allowed time will be immediately identified and reported to the relevant border authorities.
- Biometric Registration Will Be Required: Passengers will have their fingerprints taken and facial scans (biometric photos) recorded in the system upon initial entry.
- Automatic 90/180-day tracking will be implemented: Entry and exit dates and the calculation of the 90-day stay limit within a 180-day period will be done automatically by the central system instead of manual checks. This feature, which eliminates the need for manual day counting, will instantly detect rule violations and send automatic notifications to border units.
- Data will be stored for 3 years: The recorded biometric data will be stored in the system for 3 years. This will speed up processes for future travel.
- There will be no stamp on the passport. With the elimination of entry and exit stamps, the problem of passport pages filling up will be resolved, and all records will be stored digitally.
- Full integration with ETIAS will be provided: EES will serve as the primary data source for ETIAS (Travel Pre-Authorization System), which is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026.
