2025 California Walnut Industry Yield Forecast Released
The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, released the 2025 California Walnut Industry Target Measurement Report on Wednesday, September 4, 2025. According to the report, in 2025...
NASS's September 4th release provides the industry with an objective crop volume estimate. USDA field staff used scientific methods to count, measure, and weigh thousands of walnuts from major growing regions in July and August and used a statistical model to determine the annual walnut crop estimate.
In addition to the updated crop forecast, the California walnut industry is nearing the end of the 2024 production year. Early assessments appear quite promising, suggesting that the industry will see some of the lowest unsold inventory volumes in years, with much of this inventory likely to be sold in September and October before the new harvest is ready for shipment.
Robert Verloop, CEO of the California Walnut Commission“The 710.000-ton forecast is consistent with industry forecasts,” he said. “With the 2024 crop almost completely sold, the industry is in a position to immediately begin shipping the new crop of California walnuts. This will provide a secure and stable market for sellers and buyers.”
"Moreover, the quality of the walnuts is excellent. This quality has been achieved thanks to careful cultivation, ideal spring and summer conditions, and renewed soil moisture. Producers have opened the walnuts and reported that they have completely filled their shells and are exceptionally light in color for this season. This harvest could even surpass the high quality we've seen in the last two years. I believe international markets will be very pleased."
Harvesting begins in September with early flowering varieties and can extend until early November, with the crop being harvested when it is of the highest quality and has reached full maturity.
The California walnut industry anticipates a promising upcoming season.
