Above-average precipitation and snowpack in the Sierra Nevada Mountains over the past three years have provided good growing conditions for California walnut orchards. This season began with adequate surface water and enriched soil profiles, which combined with excellent spring temperatures to support bloom development.
“The California pecan season is off to a very good start and we have high expectations for this year. It looks like we’re in for a good season,” said Davin Norene, owner of Big Time Farming and a pecan growing expert.
Early walnut varieties begin budding in mid-April, while all varieties, including Chandler, continue to grow strongly in the productive areas of California. Orchards are now at a critical stage for healthy walnut development throughout the season.
Robert Verloop, CEO of the California Walnut Commission, shared his views on the 2025 walnut season with the following sentences: “This year’s excellent start has been a source of morale for our walnut sector after difficult years. Our growers seem to be getting a strong yield with excellent soil moisture and ideal temperatures for 2025.”
