Batıgöz Health Group Balçova Surgical Medical Center Gastroenterology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halil Genç shared important information on the management and prevention of these disorders.
Factors That Trigger Heartburn and Reflux
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halil Genç stated that there are many factors that trigger heartburn and reflux, and emphasized that lifestyle and eating habits play a key role in controlling these diseases. He stated that the following precautions should be taken to alleviate reflux complaints and protect stomach health.
1. Do Not Lie Down Immediately After Eating
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Genç stated that lying down after a meal can cause stomach acid to leak upwards, and said, “Staying in an upright position for at least two hours after a meal can alleviate reflux symptoms.”

2. Consume Food Slowly and Chew Well
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Genç stated that eating fast increases stomach acid and added, “Chewing your food thoroughly and eating slowly is a simple but effective way to protect stomach health.”
3. Avoid Caffeine and Acidic Drinks
Reminding that caffeinated and acidic drinks increase stomach acid and trigger reflux, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Genç stated that these drinks should be avoided, especially in the evening hours.
4. Reduce Alcohol and Cigarette Consumption
Emphasizing that smoking and alcohol have negative effects on stomach health, Genç said, “Smoking can increase reflux by weakening the muscles of the esophagus. Staying away from these habits is important in reducing reflux complaints.”
5. Eat Small and Frequent Meals
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Genç stated that large portions can strain the stomach and added, “Eating small and frequent meals throughout the day can control reflux symptoms.”
6. Avoid Spicy and Oily Foods
Stating that spicy, oily and fried foods can increase heartburn, Genç recommended limiting such foods, especially in the evening hours.
7. Use a High Pillow
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Genç stated that increasing the height of the head and body while lying down is effective in preventing stomach acid from leaking into the esophagus, and said that this method is a useful habit in alleviating reflux symptoms.
