Electronic cigarettes are also addictive. Experts have warned that electronic cigarettes are also addictive.

Cigarettes, the main cause of all fatal diseases, are a habit that millions of people want to but cannot get rid of due to their addictive nature. Stating that those who cannot quit smoking are looking for a solution in e-cigarettes, Anadolu Health Center Hospital Chest Diseases Specialist Dr. Esra Sönmez said, “However, e-cigarettes are not as harmless as they are thought to be. While they cause addiction at least as severe as regular cigarettes due to the nicotine they contain, they also cause various damages in the lungs.”

Contains Oil-Soluble Addictive Substances Like THC

Anadolu Health Center Hospital Chest Diseases Specialist Dr. Esra Sönmez, who explained that e-cigarettes reach the lungs through inhalation in the form of vapor, said, “These products contain fat-soluble and addictive substances such as nicotine or THC, in addition to aromatic additives. For this reason, the number of reported cases of damage to the airways and lung tissue caused by e-cigarettes is rapidly increasing every day.”

The first target of electronic cigarettes are young people

Emphasizing that e-cigarette use has become significantly widespread all over the world, Dr. Esra Sönmez said, “Electronic cigarettes are actually a product of the tobacco industry. The use of this product, whose main target audience is especially young people, continues to increase alarmingly. It is reported that nearly 20 percent of high school students in the United States use e-cigarettes. In fact, it is even predicted that e-cigarette sales may surpass normal cigarette sales in the near future.” Expert Dr. Esra Sönmez listed 3 major misconceptions about e-cigarettes:

  • Electronic cigarettes are harmless: Electronic cigarettes contain less toxic substances than other tobacco products, but they are definitely not innocent. Electronic cigarettes damage the lungs with direct toxic effects and can lead to death. According to data published by the US-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2020 cases of lung injury related to electronic cigarettes were reported in the United States in 2, and 807 of these cases resulted in death.
  • E-cigarettes are not addictive: E-cigarettes, like regular cigarettes, contain nicotine and cause addiction.
  • Electronic cigarettes help to end smoking: It has been observed that those who try to get rid of this habit by using electronic cigarettes quickly return to smoking. For this reason, it has no place in tobacco addiction treatment. In order to get information about proven treatment methods in the medical field, help can be obtained from a specialist health institution.
