The new preference of Turks who want to experience the comfort of a five-star hotel while also discovering new countries has become cruise tours. Once considered exclusive to people aged 40 and over with a “certain income level” due to high prices, cruise tours have begun to become the focus of attention for people from all walks of life as prices have reached the same level as hotels. With young couples, honeymooners and families with children also turning to cruise tours, the number of Turks who take cruise trips has reached 124 thousand according to figures from the Ministry of Transportation.

There is a Great Demand for Early Booking

Stating that cruise tours are an exciting travel option that offers a wide variety of activities, Coral Travel Türkiye General Manager Mehmet Kamçı “Coral Travel offers its guests at least 15 different concept Cruise Tour alternatives in all countries with ports in the world, including Europe, Asia and America. With the developing tourism in Turkey, interest in cruise tourism has increased even more recently. We are especially experiencing high demand for Mediterranean coasts and Greek Islands tours. Cruise tours, which continue to offer early booking discounts, constitute an important part of our sales.”

The Number One Choice of Turkish Cruise Tourists is the Greek Islands

The proximity to Turkey, affordable prices and visa convenience have increased interest in the Greek islands. Approximately half of those who go on cruises prefer the Greek islands. You can visit many islands such as Kos, Crete, Rhodes, Mykonos, Milos and Santorini on Greek Islands cruise tours.

After the Greek islands, the most preferred programs in the summer months are the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Norwegian Fjords tours. The Mediterranean and Adriatic Gulf, a classic cruise route, attract tourists from all over the world as well as Turkish tourists. The Norwegian Fjords tour, one of the most preferred destinations in the summer, offers the opportunity to discover Denmark and Norway.

The ongoing Schengen visa shortage has made the Far East and the Arabian Gulf attractive for the last two years. Visa-free Far East programs in particular are among the destinations that will gain the most popularity in 2025.

Five Star Hotel Comfort

One of the biggest factors in choosing cruise tours is the facilities offered. Cruise ships offer a wide range of food and beverage options. In addition to the main restaurants on the giant ships, there are open buffets, special restaurants and 24-hour cafes and bars.

There are different shows and entertainment events organized every evening on the ships, and many opportunities for passengers who love sports and active life, such as fitness centers, running tracks, basketball and tennis courts, swimming pools and water parks. Many services such as massage therapies, skin care, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi make your holiday even more enjoyable.

1 Million 470 Thousand Tourists Came in Nine Months

With these features, cruise tours, which have attracted great attention around the world, have created a huge market of 2023 billion dollars by the end of 25. The size of the cruise sector, which has regained its pre-pandemic passenger level, is expected to reach 20024 billion dollars by the end of 30.

Turkey is also among the places visited by cruise tour enthusiasts. According to the Ministry of Transport, the number of cruise ships that visited Turkish ports between January and September reached 912, and the number of passengers reached 1 million 470 thousand people. Kuşadası Port was the most popular destination with 653 thousand passengers, followed by Istanbul with 337 thousand passengers and Izmir with 128 thousand passengers.

The Black Sea Opens to the World with Cruise Tourism

In 2024, cruise tourism continued its growth in Turkey without slowing down. Following the effective evaluation of the touristic potential in the Mediterranean and Aegean ports, the Black Sea has also started to stand out as a new center of attraction for cruise tourism. Camelot Maritime Board Chairman Emrah Yılmaz Çavuşoğlu said, “We are activating the tourism potential of the Black Sea with our Astoria Grande cruise ship. Cruise tourism in the Black Sea had come to a halt due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Now, with Astoria Grande, we are trying to respond to the increasing demand by reviving tourism in this region,” drawing attention to the fact that cruise tourism, which had come to a standstill after the war, has started to rise rapidly.

Turkey stands out as a tourism paradise with its natural and cultural riches, and is known as the “chimneyless industry” thanks to the contribution of tourism to the economy. The country’s historical sites, cities, forests and seas make a significant contribution to the economy. Cruise tourism, which is a rapidly growing branch of sea and port tourism in particular, draws attention with the potential it offers. In 2024, cruise tourism gained great momentum in the Black Sea as well as the Mediterranean and Aegean ports. Black Sea cruise tourism, which had almost come to a standstill due to the negative effects of the Russia-Ukraine war, was revived this year thanks to the Astoria Grande cruise ship operated by Camelot Maritime. Cruise tourism in the region has become increasingly popular with trips organized to the ports of Samsun, Sinop and especially Trabzon.

Tourism in Black Sea Cities Revived Even More with Our Cruise Trips

With the revival of cruise tourism, there has been a significant increase in the number of foreign tourists coming to cities on the Black Sea coast by cruise ships. Camelot Maritime Chairman of the Board Emrah Yilmaz Cavusoglu“We organize cruise voyages between the Black Sea ports and Russia, and thanks to this, the number of foreign tourists coming to the cities in the region is increasing rapidly. This mobility both increases the tourism income in the port cities and revives cruise tourism in the Black Sea. There is a high demand for cruise tourism in the region, and we are responding to this demand with our Astoria Grande ship. In the first 9 months of the year, we organized 12 voyages between Russia and Trabzon, and as a result, there was a record 154% increase in the number of foreign tourists coming to Trabzon compared to the previous year.” he said.

New Route in Regional Tourism: Black Sea

The resumption of cruise voyages in the Black Sea has significantly increased the number of tourists in the region. Stating that they aim to ensure that cruise tourism develops in the Black Sea as it does in the Mediterranean and Aegean, Emrah Yılmaz Çavuşoğlu said, “Our country has a great sea and port tourism potential. However, this potential has been used less in the Black Sea compared to other regions. The war in the north of the Black Sea weakened tourism in the region. Now, we aim to contribute to our country's tourism income by organizing voyages between our cities in the Black Sea and the cities of other countries bordering the Black Sea with our cruise ship. We plan to increase our voyages next year and evaluate a cruise tourism potential in the Black Sea that will be as good as the Mediterranean and Aegean.”

The Region's Potential is Being Discovered with New Expeditions

Advertising

Stating that they aim to carry the tourism success on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts to the Black Sea, Çavuşoğlu said, “Our country has a great potential in sea tourism and we are working to realize this potential in the Black Sea. “The Black Sea has a great treasure in terms of tourism with its natural beauties, historical riches and cultural heritage. However, this potential has not yet been fully discovered. Cruise tourism offers an important opportunity that will increase tourism revenues in the region as well as contribute to local economies. With the voyages we carry out with our Astoria Grande ship, we aim to make the touristic appeal of the Black Sea more accessible to both local and foreign tourists.”
