“Global Climate Change Could Also Affect Wheat Harvest”
Eksun Food General Manager Ahmet Demir stated that this year's wheat harvest is approaching last year's figures, adding, "By the end of the year, we will have a capacity of 21 million tons, including 4 million tons of durum wheat for pasta..."
One of the leading flour producers of our country Ahmet Demir, General Manager of Eksun Gıda, made evaluations regarding the 2024 wheat harvest. Stating that a productive harvest season has been completed in every region of Turkey, Demir said, “A 2023 million-ton wheat harvest was obtained in our country in 22. The wheat harvest, which started earlier this year compared to the previous year, continued for at least 4 months all over Turkey. Our farmers continue to deliver their products to the Soil Products Office or licensed warehouses after the harvest. After the harvest period, a capacity of over 4,5 million tons will be obtained, 20 million tons of which will be for pasta.”
“Climate Change May Negatively Affect Production”
Demir, who stated that Turkey is a self-sufficient country in wheat, in addition to its contribution to the world in wheat production, emphasized the necessity of always considering the consequences of climate change. “The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) had recorded that the monthly change in international prices of food products is monitored and that there was a 0,5 percent decrease in the Cereal Price Index in August. Although this index, which is particularly affected by the good harvest expectations of main exporting countries such as Turkey and the USA, is an important indicator, it is absolutely necessary to consider the effects of climate change in the long term,” he said.
Demir said, “Climate change is changing many parameters, especially access to food and global food prices. Factors such as increased pest density in agricultural areas, drought and changes in harvest times have serious negative consequences on agricultural productivity. In order for global climate change not to affect harvest results, especially in the long term, it is necessary to protect the natural balance. In this context, effective biological control, further expansion of good agriculture and, of course, guiding public policies are of utmost importance.”
Public Support Will Provide Relief to Farmers
Demir, who also evaluated the new model of support for farmers in the public sector, said, “As of September 1, the details of agricultural production planning have begun to be announced. It is gratifying to announce that basic support and planned production support will be provided in addition to the existing fuel and fertilizer support, especially in the basins where wheat will be produced.”
Eksun Food Continues to Contribute to Grain Supply
Ahmet Demir, who also evaluated Eksun Gıda’s production capacity in his statements, said, “As a company that employs 500 people and uses new generation technologies in our Tekirdağ and Konya factories, we develop products with a social benefit approach by taking into account different consumer habits, including flour, gluten-free flour and bakery products. We continue to meet our country’s flour needs and contribute to our national export network by reaching a capacity of 9 thousand tons in the first 327 months of the year. We also aim to reach a capacity of 434 thousand tons by the end of the year.”
