Sabri Pisikoğlu explains the effects of coffee on health and what you need to know for its correct preparation as follows:

1. Coffee and the Microbiome

It is suggested that coffee consumption provides positive changes in the intestinal microbiota, especially leading to an increase in the number of Bifidobacteria living in the gastrointestinal tract. This positive effect may be due to coffee increasing colon motility, which helps food move faster through the digestive tract. However, everyone's individual tolerance to coffee may vary. Therefore, it is important to adjust coffee consumption according to personal health status.

2. Polyphenols and Antioxidants

The most important polyphenol found in coffee is chlorogenic acid, known for its antioxidant properties. The anti-inflammatory and anti-cytokine effects of chlorogenic acid may slow the growth of cancer cells by reducing cell damage. Regular coffee consumption can slow the course of colon, stomach, pancreas and liver cancers. It may also support liver health, reducing the risk of fatty liver, inflammation and cirrhosis.

3. Diabetes and Coffee Relationship

Chlorogenic acid, found abundantly in coffee, has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity and improve blood sugar control. This effect may help reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Additionally, the interaction of chlorogenic acid in coffee with Bifidobacteria in the gut may increase insulin sensitivity and reduce the risk of diabetes. These effects are generally related to its functions on the liver and pancreas.

4. Preparing and Serving Coffee

Some important points to consider when preparing coffee are:

Grinding Thickness: Grinding thickness should be adjusted according to the brewing method. For example, coarser ground coffee should be used for French Press, and medium ground coffee should be used for pour over.

Roasting Date: Freshly roasted coffee offers more aroma and flavor.

Water Temperature: When preparing coffee, the temperature of the water should be between 92-94°C. This prevents the coffee from burning and becoming bitter.

Grams: The ratio of coffee and water should be taken into consideration. A ratio of 1:17 is generally recommended. For example, 20 ml of water should be used for 340 grams of coffee. Coffee serving methods may vary depending on personal preferences. Espresso-based drinks and special brewing methods are popular options.

Benefits of Drinking Coffee on an Empty Stomach

Sabri Pisikoğlu, founder of Coffee De Madrid, said that drinking coffee on an empty stomach can speed up the metabolism and help lose weight. However, it may cause stomach disorders or a decrease in blood sugar in some people. Therefore, the health effects of drinking coffee on an empty stomach should be evaluated according to personal sensitivities. It is generally recommended to drink 2 cups of coffee a day while dieting. "Coffee can increase the metabolic rate, but plenty of water should be consumed due to its diuretic effect," he said.
