“Some Functional Foods Containing Tea Protein and Prebiotics Will Expand Their Market”
Beta Gıda Istanbul Branch Manager Hatice Uğur , discussing the details and benefits of the "Production of Powdered Protein and Prebiotics from Tea Production Process Waste" project , provided the following information: “In the black tea processing process, a large amount of tea fiber is produced as waste, and these fibers are sold to companies at low prices for purposes such as fertilizer and biofuel. Studies have shown that tea fibers have a high carbohydrate content (approximately 80%) and a protein content (approximately 12%) that can be considered a plant-based protein source. Based on this, the project aimed to obtain powdered protein and prebiotic extracts from tea fibers with high yield, determine their functional and bioactive properties, and produce various tea-based functional foods. With this project, for the first time, the functional and bioactive properties of powdered protein and prebiotic extracts produced from tea processing waste will be characterized, and their usability as functional food additives in powder form will be examined. Furthermore, the fact that some functional foods containing tea protein and prebiotics will be on the market for the first time will contribute to the expansion of the functional food market. This project aims to provide an alternative plant-based protein and prebiotic source.” It was produced domestically for the first time, making it significantly different from similar products abroad in terms of its source material.
