Summer is here, the weather is getting warmer and the need for fluids is increasing. Mineral water is among the frequently preferred drinks due to its cooling effect. So, is drinking mineral water beneficial or harmful? Prof. Dr. Yavuz Yörükoğlu explained it for you.

Mineral water is water that contains minerals. Water with high mineral content is considered hard water and is not preferred as table water. However, when these hard waters are processed with carbon dioxide, mineral water soda emerges. So a soda is obtained. However, the word "soda" should not remind you of sugary carbonated soft drinks. The word “soda” is originally of French origin and means “fizzy”.

Mineral water is the name given to water with a total dissolved solids content of not less than 250 ppm, obtained from geologically and physically protected groundwater by drilling a well or filling it from a source. The mineral value of mineral water sold in the market varies between 1500 and 3500 milligrams per liter. The taste of mineral water is directly related to the density and type of minerals it contains. The difference between mineral water and soda is that the soda beverage has a low mineral value and is made with normal water.

What You Need to Know About Mineral Water

No Special Health Benefits

Mineral water is very rich in minerals. It contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, sodium, sulfate, fluoride, silicate, chloride, carbonate and trace elements. All of these minerals are healthy. It is a part of our nutrition, but we already get plenty of these minerals with a healthy diet. Therefore, there is no particular reason to drink mineral water. Drinking mineral water has no special health benefits.

For many years, the relationship between drinking mineral water, especially calcium-rich mineral water, and kidney stones has been discussed. Kidney stones are not made up of calcium alone. It consists largely of calcium oxalate. Oxalate factor is also obtained from foods. Foods such as spinach, red beet, hazelnuts, peanuts, almonds, potatoes, kiwi and chocolate contain oxalates.

Scientific studies show that ingested calcium forms calcium oxalate in the intestines with the ingested oxalate. It was revealed that this calcium oxalate is excreted through the intestines without mixing with the bloodstream, and drinking mineral water in reasonable amounts does not increase the risk of kidney stones in healthy people. However, it is important for people with kidney stones or kidney stones to use mineral water carefully and in moderation. Drinking mineral water does not provide any special health benefits in terms of mineral supply. However, drinking mineral water in reasonable amounts does not cause any harm.

What You Need to Know About Mineral Water

How Much Mineral Water Should You Drink?

Prof. Dr. Yörükoğlu's question "How much mineral water should we drink a day?" He answered the question, “As in all matters, moderation is necessary. You can drink one or two bottles of mineral water a day on hot summer days and it will not cause any harm. Perhaps the most important benefit of mineral waters is that they facilitate the mixing and digestion of food in the stomach, thanks to the carbonate and carbon dioxide gas they contain. "Drinking mineral water, especially after a heavy meal, usually has a relaxing effect." He replied:

When you look closely at the fruit mineral waters on the market, you can see that they contain very small amounts of fruit concentrate, some sugar, fruit flavor and water. In other words, these products are not much different from fruit sodas and do not have any health benefits. It is better to avoid such products. Prof. Dr. Yörükoğlu's suggestion for those who want to drink a fruity mineral water is "You can add some lemon juice, fruit juice or a piece of lemon to the mineral water to make it flavorful." happened.

Can Diabetics Drink Mineral Water?

There is no significant content in mineral waters that has a harmful or healing effect for people with diabetes. Mineral water can be drunk in reasonable amounts. Athletes experience sweating and mineral loss while exercising intensely. Therefore, drinking mineral water after exercise can help replace lost minerals. This should also be within reasonable limits. Drinking mineral water is not important in terms of mineral supply, but it does not cause any harm when consumed in reasonable amounts. We already get the minerals it contains through a healthy diet. One should be careful and moderate when it comes to consuming fruit mineral waters or after sports.

Reflux is a disorder that disrupts the quality of daily life. Experts made suggestions to prevent reflux complaints and complaints.

On average, reflux is seen in one in every 5 people in Turkey; It manifests itself with symptoms such as burning in the chest, bitter-sour gastric fluid coming to the mouth and chest pain. Consumption of tobacco products, fatty and excessive nutrition, as well as failure to control weight increase the risk of reflux. Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. explains that the causes of reflux vary from person to person. Dr. Melih Özel said, “Advanced age and increasing drug use, obesity, hiatal hernias, smoking, malnutrition and inactivity trigger reflux.”

STOMACH PROTECTIONS MAY MAKE YOU SICK, ATTENTION!

Pointing out that small changes in daily lifestyle affect the frequency, severity and results of reflux attacks, Anadolu Health Center Hospital Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. Dr. Melih Özel emphasized that, in addition to endoscopic and surgical treatments, the most important treatment of the disease is lifestyle changes and made suggestions to reduce reflux complaints:

  • Excessive fatty diets should be avoided and care should be taken to follow a healthy diet. You should eat small and moderate meals. Although vegetables cause gas, they generally do not increase reflux.
  • Tomato juice, grapefruit juice, soda, carbonated drinks and drinks containing caffeine should be avoided.
  • Skipping meals may cause reflux to increase, care should be taken not to skip meals.
  • People with reflux should stay away from tobacco products.
  • Tight clothes should be avoided and instead of wearing corsets, tight belts and tight clothes, clothes that do not hug or squeeze the body should be preferred.
  • Sugar and sweets can increase reflux symptoms. One should be careful about consuming chocolate, mint and cinnamon.
  • Excessive spices and hot foods should not be consumed.
  • The effects of foods on reflux symptoms may vary depending on the person. Therefore, people should observe the effects of food and beverages on themselves. Foods that are known to be harmful should be consumed in more controlled, smaller portions.
  • Weight control should be done well and very strict diets should be avoided.
  • There is no food that is definitely good for reflux, so it should be remembered that there is no food or drink option that will cause the treatment to be changed or stopped.
  • You should not go to bed immediately after eating. After meals, digestion should be relieved with light movements during bedtime.
  • You should not lose control of your diet when eating out.
