Prof. Dr. Yavuz Yörükoğlu explained the importance of potatoes for human health on his YouTube channel named after him. Yörükoğlu warned, “Diabetics should not eat more than 100 grams of potatoes in one sitting.”

Stating that although potatoes are cheap and nutritious, they are a food that is carefully avoided by those who want to lose weight or not gain weight. Dr. Yavuz Yörükoğlu said, “Potatoes are thought to be high in carbohydrates and starch and high in calories. A medium-sized, 200 grams, standard potato; It contains 150 calories from carbohydrates, 0.2 grams of fat, and 5 grams of protein. Apart from these, it has zero saturated fat and zero cholesterol. It contains vitamin C, which meets approximately 75% of our daily needs, vitamin B30, which meets 6% of our daily needs, high amounts of potassium and magnesium, and 4-5 grams of fiber. "As you can see, there is not much harmful stuff in the potato." said.

The Only Problem with Potatoes; High Calorie and Sugar Boost Rate

Prof. stated that the only problem with potatoes is the high calories coming from carbohydrates and the high rate of sugar increase. Dr. Yavuz Yörükoğlu said, “Although this does not pose a problem in people with normal metabolism, it may pose a problem in diabetic patients, as we will see shortly. In this case, the following question may come to mind. Since potatoes increase blood sugar, they are harmful and should not be eaten. This logic is not correct. If so, foods such as sugar, sweets, bread, pasta and rice should not be eaten. Potato is the most innocent of these. If potatoes were really harmful, somehow eating potatoes every day; The Germans, the Irish and the Scandinavians, they should all be sick, which is not the case.” he said.

Prof. Dr. Yavuz Yörükoğlu

Prof. Dr. Yavuz Yörükoğlu: “When We Say Potato, First We Need to Know Which Form We Are Talking About”

Explaining that the reason why studies investigating the relationship between potato consumption and diabetes and cardiovascular diseases give contradictory results is that the definition of potato has not been made correctly, Prof. Dr. Yavuz Yörükoğlu said, “When we say potatoes, do we mean boiled potatoes or fries with trans fats? Yes, there is a huge difference. Let's take baked potatoes. Baked potato is an extremely delicious food, but it cannot be said to be very healthy. Is the harm of baked potato caused by its potatoes? Or is it due to the foods we add to the potatoes, such as butter, cheddar cheese, Russian salad, mayonnaise? The scientific world has done many studies to clarify this issue and has finally come to an important conclusion. To summarize these studies, we define potatoes as boiled or added to meals three or four times a week. It shows that it has no relationship with cardiovascular diseases or diabetes. On the other hand, those who eat the same amount of potato chips or fries; There appears to be a strong risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. As you can see, in science, as in life, everything is never black and white. “Everything is gray and shades of grey.”

Diabetics Should Not Eat More Than 100 Grams

Prof. says that we should not be afraid of eating potatoes, mashed potatoes or potato stew in moderate portions. Dr. Yavuz Yörükoğlu said, “However, there is a special situation here. And those are diabetics. Diabetics are much more sensitive than normal to sugar spikes from all kinds of carbohydrates. For this reason, it is beneficial for diabetic patients to be careful when eating potatoes. First of all, diabetics should not eat more than 100 grams of potatoes in one sitting, but do not be afraid, there is a way to make potatoes healthy for diabetics. When eating potatoes, eat them along with fiber-rich vegetables, especially broccoli. In this case, the rate at which the potato passes from the stomach to the intestines and mixes with the blood gradually slows down. “This prevents excessive sugar spikes.” said.

Author:

Reflux is a disorder that disrupts the quality of daily life. Experts made suggestions to prevent reflux complaints and complaints.

On average, reflux is seen in one in every 5 people in Turkey; It manifests itself with symptoms such as burning in the chest, bitter-sour gastric fluid coming to the mouth and chest pain. Consumption of tobacco products, fatty and excessive nutrition, as well as failure to control weight increase the risk of reflux. Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. explains that the causes of reflux vary from person to person. Dr. Melih Özel said, “Advanced age and increasing drug use, obesity, hiatal hernias, smoking, malnutrition and inactivity trigger reflux.”

STOMACH PROTECTIONS MAY MAKE YOU SICK, ATTENTION!

Pointing out that small changes in daily lifestyle affect the frequency, severity and results of reflux attacks, Anadolu Health Center Hospital Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. Dr. Melih Özel emphasized that, in addition to endoscopic and surgical treatments, the most important treatment of the disease is lifestyle changes and made suggestions to reduce reflux complaints:

  • Excessive fatty diets should be avoided and care should be taken to follow a healthy diet. You should eat small and moderate meals. Although vegetables cause gas, they generally do not increase reflux.
  • Tomato juice, grapefruit juice, soda, carbonated drinks and drinks containing caffeine should be avoided.
  • Skipping meals may cause reflux to increase, care should be taken not to skip meals.
  • People with reflux should stay away from tobacco products.
  • Tight clothes should be avoided and instead of wearing corsets, tight belts and tight clothes, clothes that do not hug or squeeze the body should be preferred.
  • Sugar and sweets can increase reflux symptoms. One should be careful about consuming chocolate, mint and cinnamon.
  • Excessive spices and hot foods should not be consumed.
  • The effects of foods on reflux symptoms may vary depending on the person. Therefore, people should observe the effects of food and beverages on themselves. Foods that are known to be harmful should be consumed in more controlled, smaller portions.
  • Weight control should be done well and very strict diets should be avoided.
  • There is no food that is definitely good for reflux, so it should be remembered that there is no food or drink option that will cause the treatment to be changed or stopped.
  • You should not go to bed immediately after eating. After meals, digestion should be relieved with light movements during bedtime.
  • You should not lose control of your diet when eating out.
