World Water Day: Let's Appreciate Our Health and Clean Water
Water consumption, where moderation is key and excess is harmful, should be prioritized during Ramadan. It's recommended to drink two liters of water daily, and therefore, special attention should be paid to fluid intake, especially at suhoor (pre-dawn meal).
It's beneficial to be mindful of water consumption during Ramadan, as moderation is key; too much is harmful. Liv Hospital Internal Medicine and Nephrology Specialist Prof. Dr. Tekin Akpolat emphasized the importance of drinking two liters of water daily, particularly during sahur (pre -dawn meal), stating: “Patients with kidney or heart problems may experience issues if they only drink two liters of fluid per day. If they cannot excrete the water through urine, fluid retention may occur. They should discuss their ideal fluid intake with their doctor.” He also highlighted the significance of World Water Day on March 22nd.
1. The amount of water most adults should consume is approximately 2 liters per day.
2. It is not necessary to meet the daily water need of 2 liters from water. Liquid taken with coffee, tea, yoghurt is also suitable. The important thing here is that the liquid taken does not contain harmful substances such as salt and sugar.
3. It may cause problems for patients with kidney and heart problems to consume 2 liters of fluid a day. If they cannot excrete the water they drink through urine, fluid accumulation may occur in their bodies. They should discuss the amount of fluid they should consume with their doctor.
4. Some patients may need to drink more water: Those with kidney stones and those with frequent urinary tract infections are examples of these patients.
5. It is necessary to be careful not to become dehydrated during Ramadan. Being dehydrated reduces our energy towards iftar, so it is necessary to be careful to drink fluids at sahur. Drinking water during iftar can also curb overeating.
6. Drinking less water or holding back urine to avoid going to the toilet outside the home may cause problems with urination in later ages.
7. It is sufficient for the water to be clean, being alkaline has no additional benefit.
8. There is usually no harm in drinking more than 2 liters of fluid a day, but it should not be exaggerated by taking 6-7 liters a day.
9. Kidney patients, who should not remain dehydrated, should contact their doctor immediately if they cannot drink enough fluid due to problems such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or if their fluid loss increases. They may need to contact the nearest healthcare facility to receive intravenous fluids to protect the kidney.
10. Unless you have a special condition, it is not right to drink water before going to bed or after waking up at night. Let's not forget that healthy sleep is as important as drinking water.
11. We should not forget those with severe kidney disease. Perhaps the biggest dream of most people is to drink water desperately. Therefore, let's appreciate our health and never forget that water is the healthiest drink.
