While climate change, which is more effective day by day, requires all segments of society to take action, "sustainability", which has a critical importance in preventing future environmental problems, is now among the most important agenda items of countries and companies. In this regard, we see that the search for "sustainable food systems" is being addressed more. 16 October World Food Daypublished the “2022 Sustainability Progress Report” in Sutassets an important example in this field with its integrated business model "From Farm to Table", which takes sustainability at its core.
“We wanted to support raising awareness by publishing it on World Food Day”
Expressing that they are happy to share the activities carried out in line with the targets of Sütaş in 50, when it will celebrate the 2025th anniversary of its establishment, and its sustainability performance in 2022. President of Sütaş Sustainability Committee Duygu Yilmaz, “By sharing our report on this important day, we wanted to support raising awareness about the transformation of the food system on the basis of sustainability and circularity. While our world is trying to combat the threats posed by global warming caused by climate change and the rapid depletion of natural resources, as the food industry, we have a responsibility to ensure that the increasing world population has access to healthy food. We believe that it contributes to the solution of these global problems; We work with our "Farm to Table" business model, which allows us to manage the entire process, from the feed the cows are fed to the milk and dairy products reaching the tables, with full supply chain integration. This model, which is based on sustainability and circularity, also allows us to meet our consumers' expectations for naturalness and reliable food in the best possible way.” said.
“Fighting Against Climate Change and Carbon Management Are Among Our Priorities”
Noting that combating climate change and carbon management are among his priorities in 2022, Yılmaz said, “With our work, we achieved a 7 percent decrease in greenhouse gas emissions and a 10 percent decrease in our emission intensity compared to the previous year. The most important tool in reducing our climate impact is our biogas facilities, where we obtain electricity, steam and hot water by processing the fertilizers of our farms and all the organic waste of our facilities. With the investments we have made so far, we have increased our electricity production capacity to 4 MWh and our thermal energy capacities to 18,1 MWh in 18 integrated facilities. We are able to meet 80 percent of the electricity needs of our production facilities. In this way, we also captured 590 thousand tons of carbon. This figure corresponds to 252 percent more than the amount of greenhouse gases produced as a result of our activities. Meanwhile, with energy efficiency studies 2015-2022 We saved 26 million kWh of energy between years. "This savings we achieved is equal to the annual electricity consumption of 9 households." made his assessment.
Renewable Energy is Diversified with Solar Energy Investments
Yılmaz continued his words, sharing his work on renewable energy as follows; “In 2020, we decided to diversify renewable energy production and set an investment target of 25 MWp Solar Power Plant. In this context, we have finalized solar power plant (SPP) investments of 1 MWp in our Bingöl Integrated Facilities and 4,9 MWp in our Tire Integrated Facilities. "Our solar energy feasibility and specification studies continue for the roofs of our farms and production facilities in our other locations."
Feed for Sütaş Cows is Grown in Line with Regenerative Agriculture Principles
Stating that they apply the principles of regenerative agriculture with the farmers they work with on a contract basis, Yılmaz said; “We are increasing the use of organic and organomineral fertilizers obtained from the output of our biogas facilities in agricultural production in order to enrich the soil where the feed our cows eat is grown. In this way, the amount of organic matter we added to our soil increased by 2020 percent in 2022 compared to 43, reaching 43 thousand tons. In this context, determining the effects of organic and organomineral fertilizer use on quality and productivity in agricultural soils with Provincial Directorates of Agriculture and Forestryne "Our trial work continues." said.
Our Facilities Contribute to the Welfare of the Society in the Regions Where They Are Located
Stating that the Farm to Table business model constitutes an example of a "Regional Development Model" with its economic, social impacts and inclusive nature, Yılmaz continued his words as follows; “Our business model allows us to contribute to our stakeholders socially and economically, as well as environmental sustainability. Our investments that we have made with this understanding; While activating many different sub-sectors in the agriculture, industry and service sectors, it contributes to local development and increased social welfare in the regions where we operate. In 2022, we purchased milk from more than 18 thousand milk producers and ensured the production of contracted feed crops on 33,2 thousand decares of land. We supported our forage crop producers, with whom we cooperated through a contract model, on many issues, from soil preparation to appropriate seed selection, from the development of efficient irrigation systems to the supply of organic and organomineral fertilizers and harvest activities. “We contributed to our milk producers to produce higher quality and more efficiently through the training we provided on sustainable dairy farming and on-site inspections.”
Stating that in recent years, the world's attention has turned to food waste and losses, as well as the fight against plastic waste; “We believe in the power of cooperation on both issues, and we work together with our stakeholders on the initiatives created. By 2022, we have used approximately 2.100 tons less plastic in our packaging through our weight reduction efforts. We also managed to reduce our food loss to less than 1%.” said.
Sütaş invites Sustainability volunteers to review its report, which describes its work in the fields of "sustainability of the environment", "health and happiness of individuals" and "development and welfare of society" in line with the 2025 sustainability goals.
